The Exchange TRX: KL’s Flashy New Mall Comes with a Rooftop Park (and It’s Not Just Hype)

Kuala Lumpur’s been craving something new. Not another mall trying to be Pavilion. Not more glass and elevators. Something that actually feels different. And that’s where The Exchange TRX comes in.

It opened at the end of 2023 with a lot of noise. New mall. Fancy brands. Giant rooftop park. Malaysia’s first Apple Store. Everyone was curious. Some were sceptical. Most just wanted to know one thing, is it worth the trip?

Short answer? It’s still figuring itself out. But give it a shot anyway. Might surprise you.

So, What Even Is This Place?

The Exchange TRX isn’t small. Five levels. Over 400 shops. Seibu. Mercato. A cinema. Apple stuff upstairs. And the best part? The entire top floor is a park. Not a patch of plants or a fountain in a corner. An actual rooftop garden that spreads across ten acres. With water features. Playgrounds. Shady spots you can nap under if you want.

It sits inside the TRX financial district, tucked between big glass towers and construction fences. The vibe is still shaping itself. Feels a bit too clean in some corners. But the crowd’s starting to figure it out. Families. Remote workers. Teenagers taking selfies by the koi pond. You see a bit of everything.

Getting There’s Weirdly Easy

If you’ve got MRT access, this place is a breeze. TRX station sits right underneath the mall. No need to cross streets or hunt for entrances. Just follow the signs, and you’ll pop out inside the lower floor like it’s a game portal.

Driving works too. The tunnel system is smart but can get confusing if it’s your first time. Basement parking exists. Lifts are fast. The signage mostly makes sense, though you’ll probably still ask security once.

Best part? It never feels too cramped. Wide walkways. Good ventilation. Even when it’s packed, you’re not shoulder to shoulder like in some other places.

Inside the Mall: Clean, Pricey, Kind of Addictive

Let’s not pretend. The Exchange TRX leans upscale. Shake Shack. Seibu. Gentle Monster. Even the food court has mood lighting and sleek furniture. If you came looking for bargains, maybe just window shop and grab a kopi.

There’s a good mix of local brands and global labels. Not just another KLCC clone. You’ve got everything from high-end fashion to quirky gift shops. And it’s not finished yet. Some sections are still warming up. But what’s there already feels curated. Like someone actually thought about what people would want, not just what looks good in photos.

Dining options are solid if you can stomach the prices. There’s a hawker-style food zone called Food Exchange with slightly more approachable meals. Oriental Kopi serves legit caffeine and toast. You won’t starve. You just might spend more than planned.

The Rooftop Park Is the Real Star

TRX City Park. Sounds generic. But it kind of delivers. It’s big. It’s free. And it feels like someone finally figured out that KL doesn’t just need more malls. It needs space to breathe.

The park sits on Level 3 and wraps around the roof. Forest walk. Open lawn. Koi pond. Playgrounds. Quiet corners. There’s even a splash zone where kids go nuts. If you’re bringing little ones, pack towels and spare clothes. The water play area is no joke.

There’s a kampung-style play area with slides built into a wooden cave. Families camp there for hours. Remote workers take calls near the pond. Teens lie on the grass pretending to read. It’s weirdly peaceful, even on weekends.

And yes, it looks great on camera. Especially around sunset when the glass towers catch the gold light and the city starts glowing.

What Locals Are Saying (When They’re Not Complaining About Parking)

You’ll hear mixed things. Some say it’s too atas. Others love that it’s new and clean. Parents love the stroller access. Shoppers love the air conditioning. Some folks on Reddit say it’s like Pavilion with a facelift. Others say it feels empty if you’re not into designer brands.

There were hiccups when it opened. Escalators acting up. Water features switching off at random. But most of that’s been fixed. Security and maintenance are present without hovering. It’s all starting to flow.

And unlike most malls, this one actually makes space for doing nothing. You can just sit. Look around. No one pushes you to leave. That alone makes it stand out.

Tips You’ll Be Glad You Knew

Go early on weekdays. Mornings are chill. Weekends get chaotic, especially around the splash zones.

Skip the heels. The park has some uneven spots. You’ll walk more than you think.

Bring snacks for the kids. The mall food is great. Not always toddler-approved.

Use the MRT if you can. Parking exists. Getting in through the tunnel system takes some learning.

Check for events. They’ve hosted outdoor movies. Seasonal pop-ups. EV showcases. You might catch something cool if you time it right.

It’s not the shops. Or the brands. It’s standing on that rooftop lawn with the skyline right in front of you. It’s seeing a patch of green carved out of all that steel and glass. For a second, the city feels calm. Not slow. Just balanced. And that feeling? That’s what makes it worth the visit.
